With its gleaming glass façade, rooftop pool and unbeatable downtown location, The Elser Hotel Miami brings a sort of ‘cooler than you’ energy into the city’s hotel scene. Equal parts residence and hotel, it draws a fun mix of travelers, including business folk and couples on city breaks, all mingling with Miami locals.

On entry, you’ll be offered a signature mango and tequila welcome drink while you take in the hotel’s aesthetic: it’s all relaxed and hyper-modern, with warm lighting, industrial-chic decor and a signature Diptyque scent wafting through the lobby. Add to that art-lined elevators and a carefully curated playlist and you already know that this is going to be a standout stay.

Rooms here feel more like apartments, with full kitchens, washers and dryers, as well as well positioned balconies offering sweeping views of Biscayne Bay. Studios to three-bedroom suites make it a smart pick for couples, families and extended stays, while the rooftop pool, with its skyline views, is about as Miami as you can get. The aesthetic is contemporary and minimalist, with large TVs in both the living area and bedroom, spacious closets, and comfy beds.

On the food front, Elser guests flock to ViceVersa, an Italian aperitivo bar with Neapolitan pizzas, smash burgers on Mondays and (we’d even go so far to argue) one of the city’s best negronis. For a lighter bite, breakfast and cocktails on the rooftop terrace are a treat, if a little pricey. Steps from the Kaseya Center, Bayside Marketplace, and major museums, you’ll rarely need a car if you stay here. But if South Beach is calling, guests have access to a beach club: loungers, towels, and umbrellas all included.

Time Out tip: Don’t miss the two-level gymclasses, including yoga and mat pilates, are free for hotel guests.

Towering over Biscayne Bay for more than four decades, the InterContinental Miami has shaken off its former business-first persona and re-emerged as a chic downtown destination. A recent multi-million-dollar renovation gave this IHG building a modern refresh, transforming it into a lively vacation base (without losing its downtown icon status). What hasn’t changed? It’s prime perch near Miami’s top cultural and entertainment attractions, while being just steps from Bayfront Park, where locals jog and take leisurely walks along the bay, and where the city’s longstanding New Year’s Eve celebrations happen annually. From some rooms, you can even spot the cruise port.

The vast marble lobby, designed around Henry Moore’s colossal ‘The Spindle’ sculpture, still hosts suited-up conference-goers. But these days, you’ll also find families celebrating milestones, international travelers snapping selfies and pups lounging with their cocktail-sipping humans during dog-friendly happy hours on the lawn. Upstairs, rooms are light, bright, and dressed in coastal colors that mirror the bay views from nearly every window. There are no balconies, but floor-to-ceiling windows make up for it, offering front-row seats to cruise ships coming and going. For a splurge, the Club Level suites offer two bathrooms, loads of space, and access to a separate living room, which looks like it has been pulled straight from a design magazine.

Dining is centered around Toro Toro, a lively pan-Latin steakhouse by chef Richard Sandoval. Don’t miss the fresh catch of the day. Casual snacks and cocktails are best enjoyed from the sky-high pool deck, complete with palm trees. And the hotel’s newest flex? A row of glassy cabanas available to rent for the day or special celebrations. Don’t miss the onsite spa either, offering hydrafacials and hot stone massages, or the glass-walled gym. Both come complete with postcard-worthy views.

Time Out tip: Sync your stay with one of the weekly salsa nights.

In Brickell’s glass-and-steel jungle, EAST Miami doubles as both a glittering high-rise hideaway and an urban resort. Staying here means you’ll be smack dab in the heart of the energy in Miami’s financial district—where suited-up execs and athleisure-clad locals march about the streets—but can rise above it all to a sleek, moody sanctuary with cinematic views.

The hotel’s dark, Asian-inspired aesthetic sets it apart from the city’s usual coastal look, and its fifth-floor pool deck, lined with palms and Balinese-style cabanas, almost convinces you you’ve checked into a tropical resort. But don’t be fooled: you can ride the elevator all the way down to Brickell City Centre, an upscale, open-air mall buzzing with designer shops and restaurants.

Guest rooms are softened with warm woods, artistic touches, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Biscayne Bay and the Miami River, and the balconies make you feel like you’re floating above it all (though they’re not for the acrophobics—seriously). Some rooms have soaking tubs right by the windows for bathtub-with-a-view moments, while every guest benefits from thoughtful details like branded amenity kits, filtered water taps, and tech that lets you control the lights and blinds at the push of a button. Yes, Brickell traffic noise still creeps in, but the payoff is waking up to sprawling water and city views that only get better at night.

You’ll want to follow the stylish crowd to Sugar, the 40th-floor rooftop garden bar that doubles as a sunset cocktail spot and late-night club. Drinks are crafted in the onsite ‘bar lab’ and come layered with inventive flavors, while Quinto, the hotel’s South American restaurant, plates up properly lip-smacking dishes —think truffle-topped pasta, grilled branzino, and garlicky Gulf shrimp (I’m a local, and I couldn’t believe how long I’d left it to try this place). Service at the restaurants is polished, though in the lobby and valet it can be a little hit or miss.

Time Out tip: If you do opt to dine at Quinto–which, you definitely should–don’t skip over the roasted beets. Trust me.

Eden Roc Miami Beach is where vintage Hollywood charm meets laid-back Miami cool. Designed by Morris Lapidus, the mastermind of Miami’s iconic mid-century modern aesthetic, this beachfront classic effortlessly blends timeless glamor with contemporary comfort. It boasts some of the best oceanfront views in the city, and unlike South Beach hotels that lean into the party scene, Eden Roc offers a refined, more stylish escape. Sip frozen cocktails from a shaded daybed, stroll past the lobby’s Elizabeth Taylor portrait, or head to the 22,000-square-foot spa with steam rooms and massages.

You’ll find the property right on Collins Avenue, close enough to South Beach to enjoy the action but far enough away to avoid the chaos. You’re close to the design district, packed with cute boutiques, galleries and stylish restaurants. Close by, there’s also Bal Harbour Shops: this open-air mall is a temple to luxury, with stores like Chanel, Gucci and Prada lining its palm-tree-filled walkways.

The rooms are surprisingly spacious by Miami standards, with clean lines, soothing tones and balconies that deliver cinematic ocean views. Opt for one of the higher-level rooms if you want to feel like you live here (honestly, you’ll probably start to wonder why you don’t). Food-wise, Nobu is the star, delivering A-list sushi and that famous miso cod in a sultry, scene-y setting. For something more casual, Ocean Social serves breezy seafood dishes steps from the sand.

The pool scene here has just right amount of buzz – you’ll find three infinity pools, including one for adults only. The vibe is effortlessly glamorous, with frozen drinks making the rounds. There’s also an ocean-view fitness center and direct access to the beach via a wooden boardwalk. Lush.

Time Out tip: Make Café Inez your go-to for a quick pick-me-up. Their coffee and pastries somehow make even a simple croissant feel special.

Located across the street from the famed Bal Harbour Shops, the five-diamond St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort might just be the pinnacle of luxury. From its plush suites designed by Yabu Pushelberg and its exceptional 14,000-square-foot Remède Spa to its ritzy poolside cabanas decked in Roche Bobois’ high-end furniture, the property pulls no punches when it comes to offering guests a sumptuous experience. There’s even a nightly Champagne sabering ritual to kick off your evening in style. Posh.

Stay here if you’re an art lover: everything is done to impeccable taste, with cold marble flooring and curated sculptures welcoming you in the lobby. The rooms themselves are seriously spacious—opt for an oceanview if you can—and done up in neutral tones, complete with a balcony, kitchenette and lounge areas. The toiletries are from the onsite spa. Make sure you make some time to soak in your luxuriously deep bathtub, and if you want to really treat yourself, you can opt for a butler room. The St. Regis Butler Service is one of the property’s signature perks: get your clothes pressed, your dog walked, your wine ordered and corked and your suitcase unpacked.

The beach is just a few steps away, plus a main pool and an adults-only pool complete with a bar and jacuzzi are at your disposal. For food, you’ll find four onsite options, from French to Greek, a steakhouse and the St Regis Bar and Wine Vault (which is where you’ll see the theatrical openings of bottles of bubbly with a sword). All of this in mind, a stay here doesn’t come cheap. You’ll want to book this for a seriously special occasion. You can also pay with Marriott Bonvoy points, if you’ve been saving up for some time.

Time Out tip: If you have a spare $30,000 lying around, maybe you’d like to spend the night in the 23rd-floor Grand Palace Suite, featuring ten bedrooms, a private balcony, multiple living rooms, kitchens, a poolside day villa, and butler service.

Address: 9703 Collins Avenue Bal Harbour, Miami Beach, FL 33154
Price: Starting from $864 per night

Dreaming of Ocean Drive? Not quite sure you want to be in the thick of it? A bastion of elegance in the otherwise frenetic, neon-splashed throes of the South Beach Miami hotels scene, the Betsy plays up the charm of its historic architecture with neat literary programs for guests and aspiring writers. The entire building is stocked with books you can freely borrow as you please. Photo exhibitions rotate throughout the air in the main space, and it also hosts various festivals and lectures—making it a spot for a sophisticated traveller, drawing the culturally curious.

The rooms are all charming. They have a mid-century, quality vibe to them, complete with cutesy writing desks, mini libraries and personal chandeliers. Some also have pianos and deckings—giving it a proper home away from home feel. Malin and Goetz products are stocked in the bathroom, so you can come out smelling fresh for whatever function is on the roster.

If you’re hungry? The hotel is home to the excellent LT Steak & Seafood by Laurent Tourondel, offering a variety of steaks and other dishes, such as salads. You’ll also find the more casual but equally delicious pizzeria The Alley beneath the Betsy orb, an architectural installation wedged aloft between two buildings. As for the location, you’re right on the beachfront, and you’ll be well looked-after by beach attendants. Two pools—one on the rooftop, of course—are also available. You can also book spaces here for events, such as the open-air Atrium, with overhead lights and delicate greenery, and the grandiose Carlton Room, complete with tiered Art Deco light fixtures, velvet sofas and proximity to break-out spaces like the Board Room and Gallery.

Time Out tip: The Betsy is dedicated to the cultural arts, so check its schedule of weekly programming for everything from poetry readings and art exhibitions to live jazz, most of which is free to experience.

Ah, the Biltmore. This beacon of decadent Mediterranean Revival was conceived way back in the 1920s. It has a fascinating history that spans across the 20th century—it was once a wartime hospital—and is now a lavish resort complete with a golf course, spa and several fine-dining restaurants. It’s the sort of place you come to if you want to properly get away from it all, or fancy treating the family to a memorable stay.

Few hotels in Miami carry as much history. Design wise, prepare for the place to take your breath away: it’s all vaulted ceilings, carved stone columns and a famous 315-foot tower, modeled after the Giralda in Seville, Spain. Guest rooms combine historic charm with modern comforts, featuring plush bedding, spacious marble bathrooms, and, in many cases, sweeping views of the golf course or gardens. Suites are especially grand, some offering expansive living areas and private terraces perfect for sipping wine as the sun goes down.

The hotel’s amenities are equally indulgent. Golfers can tee off on the 18-hole course, while spa-goers will find serenity in a European-style sanctuary offering an extensive menu of treatments. Food lovers are spoiled too: the Biltmore hosts multiple dining options, from the refined Italian cuisine at Fontana to casual bites at the poolside Cascade. And then there’s the pool itself, surrounded by cabanas and palm trees. And in terms of location? Coral Gables is an easy base for exploring Miami, with Miracle Mile shopping and dining just minutes away and Miami Beach reachable in under half an hour. Yet, with all this in mind, it would be understandable if you find it hard to leave the resort’s tranquil grounds at all.

Time Out tip: The Biltmore is home to one of the largest swimming pools in the Continental US, boasting around 600,000 gallons of water for swimming and lounging. Get involved.

If you’re after a stay that feels like a world of its own, then the JW Marriott Turnberry Resort and Spa more than delivers. Set across 300 acres of lush grounds in Aventura, this sprawling property has always been a place for golf lovers and spa seekers, but its major expansion in 2019 completely transformed it. With the addition of a 16-story tower, an on-site water park and a collection of restaurants, the resort manages to feel both grand in scale and surprisingly intimate.

Rooms and suites are spacious and elegant, complete with marble bathrooms, plush bedding, private balconies and helpful touches like Illy espresso machines. Some suites overlook the resort’s famous golf courses, while others give you a view of the tropical gardens or the bustling pool deck. For families, connecting rooms and multi-bedroom suites are available, making it easy to spread out.The amenities here are so good, you probably won’t want to leave the premises. Golfers will find two championship courses redesigned by Raymond Floyd, while wellness lovers can unwind at the Âme Spa & Wellness Collective, which offers a full menu of treatments and wellness classes. Kids (and plenty of adults) will spend hours at Tidal Cove Waterpark, which features a lazy river, a surf simulator and adrenaline-pumping slides. For dining, you’ll find options ranging from Michael Mina’s celebrated Bourbon Steak to casual bites at CORSAIR Kitchen & Bar. Head here for options like seafood risotto, salmon with zucchini and sweet treats like key lime pie. Location-wise, you’re right next to Aventura Mall and only a short drive from both Miami and Fort Lauderdale, making it easy to explore the area if you do come to get bored of the place (in our opinion, unlikely).

Time Out tip: Guests get free admission but locals can purchase day passes to experience all of the water park attractions, including a surf simulator and a thrilling, sling-shot–style waterslide.

If you’re planning a visit to Miami’s Coconut Grove, you’re likely already privy to the many qualities that make the area unique and, yes, worth sacrificing the beach for. This leafy swath of bayfront just south of the city core has a chic bohemian vibe, and Mayfair House Hotel & Garden perfectly encapsulates the neighborhood. The hotel opened in 1984 with an eye-catching organic design by the architect and sculptor Kenneth Treister. In 2022, it reopened following a meticulous renovation by New York-based studio Goodrich. You’re coming to Mayfair House to chill out and experience a mellower slice of Miami, where shady sidewalks are lined with funky shops and cafés, plus incredible food concepts from award-winning chef Giorgio Rapicavoli and intricate, romantic details laced throughout the property.

There are various room sizes here, but most are spacious in size—and feature unique design elements, such as typewriters, bar carts and luxurious clawfoot bath tubs. The interiors are pretty in-your-face, with big bold colours and accent prints, making the spce feel more fun and friendly than understated and chill. That said, it is very much in the spirit of the hotel. You’ll find an unpretentious feelling to this place, from the smiley service to the charm of the poolside, which makes it an easy spot to unwind.

Area wise, stay here for a different side to the city. With its festivals and book shops, marinas and sailing clubs, independent restaurants and architectural gems, Coconut Grove is a free-spirited, historic enclave in Miami and a low-key alternative to the flashy scene in South Beach. Sure, you’ll have to commute to other popular areas in Miami, like Brickell, Downtown and Wynwood, but there’s still plenty to explore here. Nearby, don’t miss El Bagel for the best bagels and breakfast sandwiches in town, or Ariete for the pinnacle of Miami Michelin-starred dining.

Time Out tip: Admit it—you still kind of want to go to the beach. If so, skip South Beach and head to Key Biscayne. The beautiful Crandon Beach is closer, 15 to 20 minutes from Mayfair House by car, with plenty of parking, rentable loungers and a much more relaxed atmosphere.

The Cipriani family certainly knows a thing or two about glamor. Their first Florida property, Mr. C Miami in Coconut Grove, brings a distinct blend of Italian sophistication and tropical ease to one of Miami’s most charming neighbourhoods. Inspired by the idea of a modern-day yacht club, the boutique hotel is instantly recognizable for its crisp white façade and chic, nautical design, with porthole-style windows and mid-century details that nod to classic European Riviera hotels. This is the kind of place where you feel stylish just by walking through the lobby.

Inside, more than 100 rooms and suites echo the brand’s signature aesthetic: clean lines, walnut wood and leather upholstery. Most rooms feature private balconies overlooking Biscayne Bay or the Coconut Grove skyline. The bathrooms are sleek, lined with marble, and stocked with luxe toiletries. For an even more elevated experience, the suites provide separate living areas and sweeping views that are especially breathtaking at sunrise. The rooftop is the heart of the hotel, home to the Bellini Restaurant and Bar, where you can indulge in Northern Italian classics. There’s a dinner dress code (leave the flip flops at the door), and it serves up everything from langoustine carpaccio to traditional lasagne. A rooftop pool shares the same panoramic views, inviting you to spend lazy afternoons in a lounger or cooling off between sightseeing. Additional perks include a small spa and a fitness center.

Coconut Grove itself is one of Miami’s most walkable neighborhoods, filled with lush banyan trees, sidewalk cafés and boutiques. From here, you’re well connected to downtown and Miami Beach via car or public transit. For boutique style rooms and a location that will have you feeling like a local, you could do a lot worse for a hotel of this price tag.

Time Out tip: Book a reservation at rooftop restaurant Bellini and have yourself a namesake cocktail – created by Harry’s Bar founder, Giuseppe Cipriani. It would be rude not to.

For big beach energy with a no-nonsense flair, head to The Plymouth Hotel in South Beach. A boutique property with Art Deco charm—we’re talking a glossy lobby, cheeky indoor tiki bar, and courtyard swimming pool decked in checkered tiles and coral lounge chairs—you’ll find it hard not to enjoy the coastal clubhouse feel of the place. There are many Instagrammable spots around here: such as cute poolside cabanas with pastel-coloured coverings lining up next to symmetric poolside palm trees (very Wes Anderson-eque) and the freestanding roll-top bathtubs in bedrooms.

Facilities wise, you’ll get a decked-out gym (though no spa). If the art deco-style pool isn’t peaceful enough for you, you can arrange for a complimentary golf buggy transfer to a private beach up the road, which is only a short journey away from the property. Here, rent a paddleboard or kayak and take in Miami from the water—you won’t regret it.

Hungry? Head past the quaint reception desk to find Miami’s outpost of the celebrated Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, where omakase dinners juxtapose ridiculous fried chicken with quite the cult following. You’ll also find a happy hour at the bar. Breakfast isn’t included here, but if you head along the street, you’ll find a few options on Collins Park. The property itself is a little tucked away, giving it a private, in-the-know feel—and is within a short walking distance from the Bass museum, where you can pop in for film screenings and soak up some of the city’s contemporary art scene. With all that in mind, this place is surprisingly decent value for money.

Time Out tip: Each guestroom has its own unique floor plan and classic design, including some with a clawfoot bathtub at the foot of the bed. No two experiences at the Plymouth are ever the same.

Another Art Deco beauty of a building, the Loews Miami Beach is a sprawling family-friendly resort with impeccable hospitality. This huge 17-story venue, built around a 1939 original hotel, is home to multiple dining venues, a gorgeous pool, and an outpost of Exhale Spa. Dreamy indeed—and definitely one to consider if you’re looking to book somewhere for a large group or family outing. Following a bumper $50 million renovation back in 2017, this place has earned a reputation as one of Miami Beach’s largest hotels, with almost 800 rooms and plenty of family-friendly facilities. That said, you’ll find all sorts of guests here.

A variety of rooms are on offer, including ocean-views with swish, beachy design references, complete with balconies and plush bedding, in addition to smart TVs and marble bathrooms. The decor is cool toned and simple, with modern artworks and accent pillows as well as ocean-view windows to really remind you where you are.

You’ll find five eating and drinking options—the best, we’d say, is probably Rao’s, in the hotel’s tall St. Moritz Tower. Head here for Italian food, but be sure to book in advance as it can get pretty busy. Another huge draw is the spa—it’s large, with steam rooms, sauna, hot tubs and treatment rooms. You’ll also have access to a schedule of fitness classes, and a poolside club for adults where you can flick through magazines on daybeds, no screaming children in sight. If you want your little ones entertained, check out the SoBe Kids Club, which offers curated activities in partnership with the Miami Children’s Museum and Frost Museum of Science, and their monthly events calendar, featuring everything from banana boat rides on the beach to outdoor film screenings. Sorted.

Time Out tip: There are a number of family-friendly perks, including free breakfasts for kids under 12.

The huge swimming pool on the bayfront is the centerpiece of the Standard, where scenesters lounge on lemon-yellow chaises and sip frosé. The vibe is decidedly hip yet mellow as guests shuffle about in bathrobes from the pool to the third-floor spa, beloved for its expansive hammam with tiered seating, eucalyptus steam room and superb yoga programming. Guests range from Art Basel attendees to reality TV stars and everyone in between—it’s all about enjoying a secluded spot and looking good while doing it. The garden is packed with spots to chill, like a fire pit and hammocks: be sure to pack your most ‘performative male’ novels.

Tucked away on Island Avenue, giving it a proper feeling of tranquility (helped by the fact that no kids are allowed), head to this hotel for holistic healing. The spa is about as picturesque as you can get, and the complimentary facilities—including the mud lounge, hot tub and arctic plunge pool—will be enough to help you unwind in no time (though you can also book a treatment to take it to the next level).

The hotel opened as the Lido Spa in the sixties, and the original Art Deco style has been maintained, while blending it with 1970s motel cool and chic modern touches. Rooms are understated, with special additions such as outside bath tubs. Service is spot-on and not in your face, helping to preserve the sophisticated atmosphere—that said, it’s still thoughtful, with touches like handouts of ice water by the poolside. For food and drinks, you’ll want to visit the speakeasy Monterrey Bar (but be sure to book in advance) to enjoy Japanese plates and a curated cocktail menu in sultry surroundings. Lido Bayside Grill is their main on-site restaurant, serving a globally-inspired menu including expertly-grilled dishes, which you can also order to your room.

Time Out tip: The Standard provides a monthly membership to locals, so if you’re looking to mingle with the cool kids of Miami, you’ve found your place.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Miami without breaking the bank, then this place is for you. A hip hostel born from a pop-up cocktail bar inside a defunct hotel on the outskirts of South Beach—that’s the brief origin story of the Freehand and its famous laid-back patio bar, Broken Shaker. And the rest, as they say, is history. The perennially popular spot reinvigorated local culture in Miami Beach by slinging masterfully creative cocktails and providing curious travelers with some of the cheapest lodgings in town.

This is a ‘luxury’ hostel, offering both a range of shared rooms of up to eight people, as well as a range of private options (that means you don’t need to stress about sharing with strangers, if that’s not your thing). The rooms themselves are surprisingly spacious, with modern, no-nonsense furniture and thoughtful decor, such as the custom-commissioned artwork by Bard College students and alumni. Though you shouldn’t be expecting the highest thread count of bedding, you’ll still get all of the expected service of a standard hotel, with mini fridges in the private rooms and towels provided, as well as housekeeping and all the usuals. There’s also a guest kitchen, though you’ll also have access to both the bar and the 27 Restaurant.

Location wise, you’re close to the beach, and there’s a pool for soaking up those Miami rays. If you’re a solo traveller, this is a particularly good spot: you may even come away with a new friend or two. There’s a proper sense of community here, among both the staff and the guests. Stay here if you want to get the party started in a cheap and cheerful way. After all, it’s all the better to save your pennies for the clubs or some shopping.

Time Out tip: Check the hostel’s website for details on the latest events, such as trivia night and karaoke.

Address: 2727 Indian Creek Dr #11, Miami Beach, FL 33140
Price: From $81 per night
Closest transport: You’re a short walk from the Miami Beach Trolley and the Metrobus, with stops on Collins Avenue and 23rd Street.

This first U.S. outpost of one of Europe’s most popular chain of hostels is a hip, revamped Art Deco property with heaps of original charm. Accommodations range from shared rooms with the option for bunks (from four to six beds per room) to private kings. The design is understated and inoffensive, with little decor besides an accent pillow and artwork on the walls for privates and individual numbered bunk beds (without privacy curtains, if that is your thing) and a mirror station in dorms.

Before we say more, we’ve got to emphasize that this place is cheap. But it’s not gross. You’ll get clean, modern rooms with basic amenities, but don’t be expecting a bottle of champagne on entry (we’d probably recommend upping your budget, and looking at some of the other properties on this list, if you’re after that sort of luxury). That said, if you want a place to book for a large group of friends without breaking the bank, you could do a lot worse here.

There’s a palm tree-surrounded swimming pool, and a decorated lobby and lounge area with chill-out floor cushions for hanging around. With regards to food and drink on offer, there are two distinct sites on the premises: funky Mexican spot Pikio Taco, and the pool bar serving all kinds of frozen cocktails and snacks. The taqueria spot is swish, tasty, and open all day—offering classic margs, shrimp ceviche and a variety of tacos. All in all, this is very good value for money and ideal if you’re looking to explore Miami on a budget and don’t fancy a dated motel or a below-par rental apartment
